The term itself derives from ṭamth, meaning blood; hence a menstruating woman is called ṭāmith. It is as though He said: no human or jinn has caused them to bleed through intercourse. “Untouched before them by any human or jinn.” Al-Zajjaj said: This indicates that a jinn can have intercourse just as a human being can. ⦗149/a⦘ Mujahid said: When a man has intercourse without invoking Allah’s Name, a jinn wraps itself around his penis and joins him in intercourse. Muqatil said regarding His words, “Untouched before them by any human or jinn”: This is because they were created in Paradise. According to his view, these are among the maidens of Paradise.
Al-Sha‘bi said: They are among the women of this world, who have not been touched since they were created anew. This was also the view of al-Kalbi. (2) That is, in this new form in which they were created, no human or jinn has had intercourse with them.
Talhah ibn Musarrif recited it as lā yaṭmuthhunna (“none will deflower them”), pronouncing the mīm with an u-vowel in both instances.
Al-Kisa’i recited one of the two instances with an u-vowel: if he pronounced the first with an i-vowel, he pronounced the second with an u-vowel; and if he pronounced the first with an u-vowel, he pronounced the second with an i-vowel. This was based on what Abu Ishaq al-Sabi‘i related: “I used to pray behind the companions of Ali and hear them recite lam yaṭmuthhunna with an u-vowel; and I used to pray behind the companions of Abdullah ibn Masud and hear them recite it with the mīm pronounced with an i-vowel.” Al-Kisa’i would pronounce one with an u-vowel and the other with an i-vowel so as not to depart from these two transmitted reports. Regarding His words, “They will be like rubies and coral,” Qatadah said: “The clarity of the ruby and the whiteness of the coral.”
It has been related to us from Abu Sa‘id, from the Messenger of Allah, regarding the description of the people of Paradise: “Every man among them will have two wives; each wife will wear seventy garments, and the marrow of their shanks will be visible through their flesh, blood, and skin.” (4)
Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Nu‘aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il related to us; Abu al-Yaman informed us; Shu‘ayb informed us; Abu al-Zinad informed us from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah said: The first company to enter Paradise will be in the likeness of the moon on the night when it is full, and those who follow them will be like the brightest
