therein, in two varieties: fresh and dry. Ibn Abbas said: There is no fruit in this world, sweet or bitter, that is not found in Paradise—even the colocynth—except that it is sweet there. (1)
“So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (53) Reclining on furnishings lined with brocade, with the fruit of both gardens hanging close. (54) So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? (55) In them will be women restraining their glances, untouched before them by any human or jinn. (56)”
“So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?”
“Reclining on furnishings”: furush is the plural of firāsh (bedding). “Lined”: the word is the plural of biṭānah, meaning that which lies beneath the outer covering. Al-Zajjaj said: It is that which faces the ground. “Of brocade”: that is, thick silk. Ibn Masud and Abu Hurayrah said: These are the inner linings; then what do you suppose of the outer coverings? (2) Said ibn Jubayr was asked, “The inner linings are of brocade, so what are the outer coverings?” He replied: This is among that of which Allah, exalted is He, said: “No soul knows what comfort for the eyes has been hidden for them.” [al-Sajdah 32:17] (3) He also said: Their inner linings are of brocade, while their outer coverings are of solid light. (4) Ibn Abbas said: He described the inner linings but left the outer coverings unmentioned, because no one on earth knows what the outer coverings are. (5)
“And the fruit of both gardens will hang close”: janā is the fruit that is picked. That is, their fruit will be near at hand, accessible to one standing, sitting, or lying down. Ibn Abbas said: The tree will draw near until the friend of Allah may pick from it, whether he wishes while standing or while sitting. (6) Qatadah said: Neither distance nor thorns will keep their hands from it. “So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?”
“In them will be women restraining their glances”: they lower their eyes, restricting their gaze to their husbands; they neither look at nor desire anyone else. Ibn Zayd said: She will say to her husband, “By the might of my Lord, I see nothing in Paradise more beautiful than you. All praise is due to Allah, who made you my husband and made me your wife.” (7) “Untouched by any human or jinn before them”: no one will have had intercourse with them or [deflowered them]. (8)
