Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“The guilty will be recognized by their marks, and they will be seized by their forelocks and their feet. So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny? This is Hell, which the guilty used to deny. They will move about between it and scalding water, heated to its utmost limit. So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?”

“So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?” “The guilty will be recognized by their marks”: namely, the blackness of their faces and the blueness of their eyes, as He, exalted be His mention, says: “On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black” (Aal ‘Imran, 106). “And they will be seized by their forelocks and their feet”: their feet will be joined to their forelocks from behind, and they will be thrown into the Fire. “So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?”

Al-Zajjaj said: The verb anā means to reach full ripeness; thus, ānin describes that whose ripeness has reached completion. The meaning is that they will move back and forth between Hellfire and scalding water. This is expressed in His saying: “If they call for relief, they will be given water like molten metal” (al-Kahf, 29).

Ka‘b al-Ahbar said: “Ānin is a valley among the valleys of Hell in which the pus of the people of the Fire gathers. They will be led in chains and immersed in that valley until their limbs are torn apart. Then they will emerge from it, and Allah Most High will recreate them anew, after which they will be cast into the Fire.” (1) This is the meaning of His saying: “They will move about between it and scalding water, heated to its utmost limit.”

“So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?” Everything that Allah Most High mentions, from His words, “Everyone upon it will perish,” up to
