Ibn ‘Abbas also said: The angels will not question the guilty, because they will recognize them by their marks. The evidence for this is what follows. This was the view of Mujahid (1).
Ibn ‘Abbas was asked how to reconcile this verse with His saying, “So by your Lord, We shall surely question them all” (al-Hijr, 92). He replied: He will not ask them, “Did you do such and such?” for He knows that better than they do; rather, He will ask them, “Why did you do such and such?”
‘Ikrimah said: These are different situations: they will be questioned in some of them and not questioned in others.
Ibn ‘Abbas also said: They will not be questioned in a manner of compassion and mercy; rather, they will be questioned by way of rebuke and reproach.
Abu al-‘Aliyah said: No one other than the guilty person will be questioned concerning the guilty person’s sin (2).
“So which of your Lord’s favors will you two deny?” (40)
