(1) Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in al-Tafsir, "Tafsir Surat al-Rahman" (9:177), with the wording: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to his Companions and recited to them ..." He said: "This is a gharib hadith; we know it only through the narration of al-Walid ibn Muslim from Zuhayr." Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: "It seems that the Zuhayr ibn Muhammad who was in Syria was not the one from whom reports were narrated in Iraq. It seems he was another man whose name they changed," referring to the repudiated reports narrated from him. Muhammad ibn Ismail said: "The Syrians narrate repudiated reports from Zuhayr ibn Muhammad, whereas the Iraqis narrate inverted hadiths from him." Al-Dhahabi cited it in Mizan al-Itidal, in the entry on Zuhayr (2:84), and said: "Hisham ibn Ammar alone narrated it from al-Walid." Al-Hakim also recorded it (2:473) and said: "It is sound according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, though they did not record it." Al-Mubarakfuri said: "This hadith of Jabir was narrated by al-Walid ibn Muslim from Zuhayr ibn Muhammad through a Syrian transmission; thus, the hadith is weak. However, it is corroborated by the hadith of Ibn Umar, recorded by Ibn Jarir, al-Bazzar, al-Daraqutni in al-Afrad, and others. Al-Suyuti authenticated its chain, as cited in Fath al-Bayan."
