Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Muhammad ibn Nafi‘ narrated to us; Zayd ibn Hubab narrated to us; Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih informed me; Azhar ibn Sa‘id al-Harazi informed us from ‘Asim ibn Humayd, who said: I asked Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, with what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would begin his night prayer. She replied: When he rose, he would magnify Allah ten times, praise Allah ten times, glorify Allah ten times, declare His oneness ten times, and seek His forgiveness ten times. He would then say: “O Allah, forgive me, guide me, provide for me, and grant me well-being.” And he would seek refuge from the hardship of standing on the Day of Resurrection.” (1)

“And glorify Him through the night and at the setting of the stars.” (49)

“And glorify Him through the night”: that is, pray to Him. Muqatil said: This refers to the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers. “And at the setting of the stars” refers to the two units of prayer before the Fajr prayer, when the stars recede—that is, disappear in the light of dawn. This is the view of most Quran commentators. Al-Dahhak said: It refers to the obligatory Fajr prayer.

Abu al-Hasan al-Sarakhsi informed us; Zahir ibn Ahmad informed us; Abu Ishaq al-Hashimi informed us; Abu Mus‘ab informed us from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Muhammad ibn Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recite Surah al-Tur in the Maghrib prayer.
