his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse: “And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be like you.” They said, “Messenger of Allah, who are these people who, if we turn away, will replace us and not be like us?” He struck the thigh of Salman the Persian and then said, “This man and his people. Even if religion were at the Pleiades, men from the Persians would attain it.” (1)
(1) Al-Tirmidhi narrated it in al-Tafsir, under “Tafsir Surat Muhammad,” 9:145, and said: “This is a gharib hadith, and there is some criticism concerning its chain of transmission. Abd Allah ibn Ja'far also narrated this hadith from al-Ala ibn Abd al-Rahman.” It was also narrated by al-Tabari, 26:66-67; al-Hakim, 2:458, who declared it authentic; Abd al-Razzaq in al-Musannaf, 11:66; and the compiler of Sharh al-Sunnah, 14:200. Al-Suyuti, in al-Durr al-Manthur, 7:506, attributed it to Abd ibn Humayd, Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Tabarani in al-Awsat, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Dala'il.
