Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

to him: about seventy men from their people among the jinn responded. They returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and met him at al-Batḥā’. He recited the Quran to them and instructed them in what to do and what to refrain from. (1) This is evidence that he, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent to both jinn and humankind alike.

Muqātil said: “No prophet before him was sent to both humankind and jinn together.” (2)

The scholars differed concerning the reward of the believing jinn. (3) One group held that they have no reward other than being saved from the Fire. They interpreted His words, “He will forgive you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment,” accordingly. This was the view of Abu Hanifah, may Allah Most High be pleased with him.

Sufyān related from Layth, who said: “The reward of the jinn is that they are protected from the Fire. Then they will be told, ‘Become dust,’ and they will become dust, like the beasts.”

Abu al-Zinād said: “When judgment has been passed between the people, the believing jinn will be told, ‘Return to dust,’ and they will return to dust. At that point the disbeliever will say, ‘Oh, would that I were dust!’” (78:40)

Others said that they will receive reward for doing good, just as they will be punished for doing evil, like human beings. This was the view of Mālik and Ibn Abī Laylā.

Jarīr related from al-Ḍaḥḥāk: “The jinn will enter Paradise and eat and drink.”

Al-Naqqāsh mentioned in his Tafsir a report that they will enter Paradise. It was asked, “Will they partake of its bliss?” He replied, “Allah will inspire them to glorify and remember Him, and through its delight they will attain what the children of Adam attain from the bliss of Paradise.” Arṭāh ibn al-Mundhir said: “I asked Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb, ‘Will the jinn receive reward?’ He said, ‘Yes,’ and recited: ‘Untouched before them by any human or jinn.’ (55:74) He then said, ‘Human women are for humans, and female jinn are for jinn.’”

ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: “The believing jinn will be around Paradise, in its outer precincts and spacious environs, but not within it.”

“And whoever does not respond to Allah’s caller cannot escape Him on earth, and will have no protectors besides Him. Such people are clearly astray.” (32)

“And whoever does not respond to Allah’s caller cannot escape Him on earth”: he cannot escape Allah and evade Him. “And will have no protectors besides Him”: helpers who can defend him against Allah. “Such people are clearly astray.”
