“And the evil consequences of what they had done will become apparent to them, and they will be engulfed by what they used to ridicule. (33) And it will be said, ‘Today We will forsake you as you forsook the meeting of this Day of yours. Your refuge is the Fire, and you will have no helpers.’ (34) That is because you made Allah’s verses an object of ridicule, and the life of this world deceived you. So today they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be given an opportunity to make amends. (35) So to Allah belongs all praise—the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, the Lord of all worlds. (36) To Him belongs all majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. (37)”
“And the evil consequences of what they had done will become apparent to them” in the Hereafter (1): that is, their recompense for those deeds. “And they will be engulfed by what they used to ridicule.”
“And it will be said, ‘Today We will forsake you’”: We will leave you in the Fire, “as you forsook the meeting of this Day of yours”: you neglected faith and righteous action in preparation for meeting this Day. “Your refuge is the Fire, and you will have no helpers.” “That is because you made Allah’s verses an object of ridicule, and the life of this world deceived you,” until you said, “There is no resurrection and no reckoning.” “So today they will not be brought out of it”: Hamzah and al-Kisa'i recited it with the initial letter in the active form and the final letter with a dammah, while the others recited it with the initial letter with a dammah and the final letter in the active form. “Nor will they be given an opportunity to make amends”: they will not be asked to return to obedience to Allah, for on that Day He will accept neither excuse nor repentance.
“So to Allah belongs all praise—the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, the Lord of all worlds. To Him belongs all majesty”—that is, greatness—“in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
Imam Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Qadi informed us; al-Sayyid Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Alawi related to us; Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Sharqi informed us; Ahmad ibn Hafs, Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Farra', and Qatan ibn Ibrahim related to us, saying: Hafs ibn Abd Allah informed us; Ibrahim ibn Tahman related to me, from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib, from al-Agharr Abu Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah, Exalted is He, says: ‘Supreme majesty is My cloak, and greatness is My lower garment. Whoever contends with Me regarding either of them, I shall admit him into the Fire.’” (2)
