—Jesus will put him forward and pray behind him according to the law of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Then he will kill the swine, break the cross, demolish the synagogues and churches, and kill the Christians except those who believe in him.” (1)
Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nu'aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma'il related to us; Ibn Bukayr related to us; al-Layth related to us from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, from Nafi', the freedman of Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “How will it be with you when the son of Mary descends among you and your imam is from among you?” (2)
Al-Hasan and a group of others said: “And indeed, it” means that the Quran is knowledge of the Hour: it informs you of its coming and tells you of its conditions and terrors. “So do not doubt it”: do not entertain any doubt concerning it. Ibn Abbas said: Do not deny it. “And follow Me” in affirming tawhid (Allah’s oneness). “This”—the way upon which I am—“is a straight path.”
“Let not Satan turn you away; indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. (62) And when Jesus came with clear proofs, he said, ‘I have come to you with wisdom and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ. So fear Allah and obey me. (63) Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.’ (64) But the factions differed among themselves; so woe to those who did wrong, from the punishment of a painful Day. (65) Do they await anything but the Hour, that it should come upon them suddenly while they are unaware? (66)”
“Let not Satan turn you away”: let him not divert you from the religion of Allah. “Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”
“And when Jesus came with clear proofs, he said, ‘I have come to you with wisdom’”—that is, with prophethood—“and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ”: some of the rulings of the Torah. Qatadah said: This refers to the disagreement of the sects that divided into factions over the matter of Jesus. Al-Zajjaj said: What Jesus brought in the Gospel was only some of that over which they had differed; outside the Gospel, he clarified for them what they needed. “So fear Allah and obey me.”
“Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path. But the factions differed among themselves; so woe to those who did wrong, from the punishment of a painful Day. Do they await anything but the Hour”—meaning, it will inevitably come upon them, so it is as though they are awaiting it—“that it should come upon them suddenly”: unexpectedly, “while they are unaware.”
