“And you will see them brought before it, humbled by humiliation, looking with furtive glances. Those who believed will say, ‘Indeed, the true losers are those who have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection.’ Surely the wrongdoers will be in everlasting punishment.” (45)
“They will have no protectors, apart from Allah, to come to their aid. And whoever Allah leaves astray will have no way out.” (46)
“Respond to your Lord before there comes, from Allah, a Day that cannot be averted. On that Day, you will have no refuge, nor will you have anyone to deny or alter what has befallen you.” (47)
“And whoever Allah leaves astray will have no protector after Him”: he will have no one to undertake his guidance after Allah has led him astray, or to shield him from Allah’s punishment. “And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment” on the Day of Resurrection, “saying, ‘Is there any way to return?’” They will ask to be sent back to this world.
“And you will see them brought before it”—that is, before the Fire—“humbled,” subdued and abased, “by humiliation, looking with furtive glances”: because of the humiliation that has overcome them, they will steal glances at the Fire out of fear of it and abasement within themselves. It has also been said that “from” here carries the sense of “with”: with a furtive, weak glance brought on by humiliation. It has further been said that they are described as looking with a furtive glance because they will not open their eyes fully, but will look with only part of them. Another view is that they will look at the Fire with their hearts, since they will be gathered blind, and the sight of the heart is hidden.
“And those who believed will say, ‘Indeed, the true losers are those who have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection.’” It has been said that they will have lost themselves by being consigned to the Fire, and their families because those families will belong to others in Paradise. “Surely the wrongdoers will be in everlasting punishment.”
“They will have no protectors, apart from Allah, to come to their aid. And whoever Allah leaves astray will have no way out”: no path to what is right, to attaining the truth in this world, or to Paradise in the Hereafter. The path of goodness will have been barred to them.
“Respond to your Lord”: answer Allah’s caller—namely, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him—“before there comes, from Allah, a Day that cannot be averted”: no one will be able to repel it, and it is the Day of Resurrection. “On that Day, you will have no refuge” to which you can flee, “nor will you have anyone to deny or alter what has befallen you.”
