and do not follow their desires. Say, “I believe in whatever Book Allah has sent down”—that is, I believe in all of Allah’s Books. “I have been commanded to deal justly among you” [“that I deal justly among you”] (1). Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I have been commanded not to burden you with more than the rulings Allah has made obligatory upon you.” It was also said: to deal justly among you in all circumstances and matters.

“Allah is our Lord and your Lord. We have our deeds, and you have your deeds”: that is, our God is One, even though our deeds differ; thus each person will be recompensed according to his deeds. “There is no dispute”—that is, no contention—“between us and you.” This was abrogated by the verse commanding fighting (2): when he had not been commanded to fight, but was commanded to call to Allah, there was no contention between him and those who did not respond. “Allah will bring us together” in the Hereafter, to render final judgment, “and to Him is the final return.”
