Ibn Abbas said: (1) Allah, Exalted is He, said: “As for you, O heaven, bring forth your sun, your moon, and your stars; and you, O earth, cause your rivers to flow forth, and bring out your fruits and vegetation.” And He said to them both: “Do what I command you, willingly; otherwise I shall compel you to do it [until you do so unwillingly].” (2) So they both responded willingly, (3) and said, “We come willingly.” [He did not say, ‘willingly,’ using the dual feminine form] (4) because the expression includes the heavens and the earth and all that is within them. Its sense is: “We come, bringing forth what is within us, willingly.” Thus, when He ascribed speech to them, He treated them grammatically as a plural of rational beings.
