“They will say, ‘Did your messengers not come to you with clear proofs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ They will say, ‘Then supplicate yourselves.’ But the supplication of the disbelievers is only in futility.” (50)
“And when they argue in the Fire”—that is, remember, O Muhammad, for your people when they dispute: the people of the Fire disputing in the Fire. “Then the weak will say to those who were arrogant, ‘Indeed, we were your followers in the world; so can you relieve us of a share of the Fire?’” According to the scholars of Basra, the word for “followers” may be singular or plural; its singular form is “follower.” The scholars of Kufa said that it is a plural noun with no singular form of its own, and its plural is “followers.”
“Those who were arrogant will say, ‘Indeed, we are all in it. Indeed, Allah has judged between His servants.’ And those in the Fire,” when the punishment became severe upon them, “will say to the keepers of Hell, ‘Call upon your Lord to lighten for us, for one day, the punishment.’”
“They will say”—meaning, the keepers of Hell will say to them—“Did your messengers not come to you with clear proofs?” They will say, “Yes.” They will say, “Then call upon your Lord yourselves; we will not call upon Him for you,” for they knew that the punishment would not be lightened for them. Allah Most High said: “But the supplication of the disbelievers is only in futility.”
