Ibn Abbas and al-Dahhak recited it as “the Day of Fleeing,” with a doubled dal—that is, the day when they flee in different directions. They will flee across the earth as camels bolt away when they stray from their owners.
Al-Dahhak said: Likewise, when they hear the roaring of the Fire, they will flee; yet whichever direction they turn, they will find the angels standing in ranks. They will then return to the place where they had been. This is the meaning of His saying, Exalted is He: “And the angels will be at its edges” (al-Haqqah 69:17), and His saying: “O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass beyond them” (1). (al-Rahman 55:33)
“The Day you will turn and flee, with no defender against Allah. And whomever Allah leads astray will have no guide.” (33)
