“And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.” (68)

His saying, exalted is He: “And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead”—they will die from terror; this is the first blast—“except whom Allah wills.” The scholars differed concerning those whom Allah has exempted, and we have mentioned them in Surah al-Naml (1). Al-Hasan said: “Except whom Allah wills,” meaning Allah alone. “Then it will be blown again,” that is, in the Horn; “again,” that is, another time; “and at once they will be standing, looking on”—[from their graves] (2), awaiting Allah’s command concerning them.

‘Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Nu‘aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il related to us; Muhammad related to us; Abu Mu‘awiyah related to us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:
