Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

one blow. “Indeed, We found him patient. What an excellent servant he was! Indeed, he was ever turning to Allah.”

“And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, men of strength and insight. Indeed, We chose them for an exclusive quality: remembrance of the Abode. And indeed, with Us they are among the chosen, the excellent. And remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Dhul-Kifl; all were among the excellent. This is a reminder; and indeed, for the righteous is an excellent return.” (45–49)

Concerning His saying, “And remember Our servants,” Ibn Kathir recited “Our servant” in the singular, while the others recited “Our servants” in the plural.

“Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, men of strength”: Ibn Abbas said: those endowed with strength in obedience to Allah Most High. “And insight”: in knowledge of Allah—that is, insight in religion. Qatadah and Mujahid said: They were given strength in worship and insight in religion. (1)

“Indeed, We chose them”: that is, We selected them. “For an exclusive quality: remembrance of the Abode.” ⦗104a⦘ The people of Madinah recited it as an annexed construction, while the others recited it with nunation. According to the former reading, its meaning is: We chose them through their remembrance of the Abode of the Hereafter and through their working for it; and “remembrance” here means mention.

Malik ibn Dinar said: “We removed from their hearts the love and remembrance of this world, and We singled them out through love and remembrance of the Hereafter.”

Qatadah said: “They called people to the Hereafter and to Allah, exalted is He.”

Al-Suddi said: “They were singled out through fear of the Hereafter.”

It was also said that it means: We singled them out through the best of what is in the Hereafter. (3)

Ibn Zayd said: As for whoever recites it with nunation, its meaning is: through a pure quality, namely remembrance of the Abode. Thus, “remembrance of the Abode” is in apposition to “the pure quality.”

It was also said that “We chose them” means: We made them sincere, as indicated by what We have related about them concerning remembrance of the Hereafter.
