Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

—mount it and do not fear it.” Elijah set out with Elisha, and when they reached the place to which he had been directed, a horse of fire approached them—or, it is said, a horse the color of fire—until it stood before him. Elijah leapt onto it, and the horse sped away with him. Elisha called out to him, “O Elijah, what do you command me to do?” From the highest heaven, Elijah cast his cloak down to him; this was a sign that he had appointed him as his successor over the Children of Israel. That was the last they saw of him.

Allah Most High raised Elijah from their midst, deprived him of the pleasure of food and drink, and clothed him in feathers. Thus, he was human and angelic, earthly and heavenly. Allah Most High then set an enemy against King Ahab and his people. The enemy came upon them from where they did not perceive him, until he overwhelmed them. He killed Ahab and his wife Jezebel in the garden of Mazdaki. Their corpses remained cast away (1) in that small garden until their flesh decayed and their bones crumbled.

Allah Most High made Elisha a prophet and sent him as a messenger to the Children of Israel. Allah revealed to him and strengthened him, and the Children of Israel believed in him ⦗98/b⦘ and held him in reverence. Allah Most High’s judgment remained established among them until Elisha departed from them. (2)

Al-Sari ibn Yahya narrated from Abd al-Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad that he said: “Khidr and Elijah fast the month of Ramadan in Jerusalem, and they attend the pilgrimage season every year.”

It is also said that Elijah is entrusted with the wildernesses, while Khidr is entrusted with the seas. (3) This is the meaning of His saying, Most High:

“[Recall] when he said to his people, ‘Will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Baal and abandon the Best of creators—Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?’” (124–126)
