“When we have died and become dust and bones, shall we truly be resurrected?”
“Along with our forefathers of old?” That is, along with our forefathers of old.
“Say, ‘Yes’”: you will be resurrected, “and you will be utterly humbled”—that is, abased. Such humiliation is the most severe form of abasement.
“It will be but”: that is, the matter of resurrection or the Resurrection itself, “a single blast”—that is, a cry—“and at once they will be looking on”: alive.
“They will say, ‘Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense’”: that is, the Day of Reckoning and requital.
“This is the Day of Decision”: the Day of Judgment. It was also said: the day on which the righteous and the wicked will be separated—“which you used to deny.”
“Gather together those who wronged themselves”: that is, those who committed shirk. Gather them at the standing-place for reckoning and requital, “their like-minded companions”: those resembling them, their followers, and those like them.

Al-Dahhak and Muqatil said: their accompanying devils; every disbeliever will be chained with his devil. Al-Hasan said: their polytheist wives.
“And whatever they used to worship besides Allah” in this worldly life: that is, idols and false deities. Muqatil said: this means Iblis and his hosts, citing His words: “Do not worship Satan” (Surah Ya-Sin, 60).
“And lead them to the path of Hellfire.” Ibn ‘Abbas said: Direct them to the way leading to the Fire. Ibn Kaysan said: Lead them forward. The Arabs call the one who goes ahead a guide.
“Detain them”: hold them back. One says, “I detained him,” and so he remained standing.
The exegetes said: When they are driven toward the Fire, they will be detained at the Bridge, for the questioning takes place at the Bridge. Then it will be said:
