“So glory be to Him in whose Hand is the dominion of all things, and to Him you will be returned.” (83)

“So glory be to Him in whose Hand is the dominion of all things, and to Him you will be returned.”

Imam Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Qadi informed us; Abu al-Tahir al-Ziyadi informed us; Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Qattan informed us; Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Darabajirdi narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn Uthman narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Uthman—not al-Nahdi—from Maqil ibn Yasar, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Recite Surah Ya-Sin over your dying ones.” (1)

Muhammad ibn al-Ala also narrated it from Ibn al-Mubarak, saying: from Abu Uthman—not al-Nahdi—from his father, from Maqil ibn Yasar.

(1) Reported by Abu Dawud, Kitab al-Jana'iz (Funerals), chapter: “Recitation in the Presence of the Deceased,” 4:287; Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Jana'iz, chapter: “What Is to Be Said in the Presence of a Sick Person,” no. 1448, 1:465-466; al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan, 3:383; al-Nasa'i, Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah, no. 581; Imam Ahmad, 5:26; Ibn Hibban, Mawarid al-Zam'an, no. 720, p. 184; and al-Hakim, 1:565. Al-Hakim said: “Yahya ibn Sa'id and others narrated it as mawquf (stopped at the Companion).” Ibn al-Mubarak's view is correct, since an addition transmitted by a trustworthy narrator is accepted. Abu Uthman and his father are unknown, however, so the hadith is weak. The author also recorded it in Sharh al-Sunnah, 5:395. Ibn Hajar mentioned in Fath al-Bari that Ibn al-Qattan criticized it for inconsistency, for being narrated as mawquf, and for the unknown status of Abu Uthman and his father. Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi related from al-Daraqutni that he said: “This hadith has a weak chain of transmission and an unknown text; no authentic hadith exists on this subject.” See Talkhis al-Habir, 2:104; Irwa al-Ghalil, 3:150-152.
