Surah Ya-Sin—Makkan (1)
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
“Ya-Sin. By the wise Quran, you are surely one of the messengers, upon a straight path.” (1–4)
Regarding Ya-Sin and Nun, Ibn ‘Amir, al-Kisa’i, and Abu Bakr recited the nun in both with concealment. Qalun concealed the nun in Ya-Sin but pronounced it clearly in Nun, while the rest pronounced it clearly in both.
They differed concerning the interpretation of Ya-Sin, in accordance with their disagreement regarding the isolated letters (2). Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “It is an oath” (3). It is also narrated from him that it means, “O man” (4), in the language of Tayy’, referring to Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. This was also the view of al-Hasan, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, and a group of scholars.
Abu al-‘Aliyah said: “O man.” (5)
Abu Bakr al-Warraq said: “O master of mankind.”
“By the wise Quran.”
“You are surely one of the messengers”: Allah swore by the Quran that Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is one of the messengers. This refutes the disbelievers when they said, “You are not a messenger” (al-Ra‘d: 43).
“Upon a straight path”: this is a second predicate; that is, he is one of the messengers and is upon a straight path. It was also said that its meaning is: You are surely one of those messengers who are upon a straight path.
