One of them says: ‘O Allah, grant the spender a replacement,’ while the other says: ‘O Allah, grant the withholder loss.’” (1)

Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Abu Mansur al-Sam'ani informed us; Abu Ja'far al-Rayani informed us; Humayd ibn Zanjawayh informed us; Abu al-Rabi' informed us; Abd al-Hamid ibn al-Hasan al-Hilali informed us; Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir informed us, from Jabir ibn Abd Allah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Every act of kindness is charity, and whatever a man spends on himself and his family is recorded for him as charity. Whatever a man uses to protect his honor is likewise recorded for him as charity.” I said: “What does it mean that a man protects his honor?” He said: “What he gives to a poet or a sharp-tongued person in order to protect himself. Whatever expenditure a believer makes, Allah guarantees its replacement, except expenditure on construction or in disobedience to Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” (3)
His words, “I said: ‘What does it mean?’” were spoken by Abd al-Hamid to Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir.
Mujahid said: If one of you has something in his hand, let him be moderate, and let him not misinterpret this verse: “Whatever you spend of anything, He will replace it.” For provision is apportioned: perhaps a person’s provision is scant, while he spends as one whose provision has been made abundant. The meaning of the verse is that whatever replacement there is comes from Him. (4)
