“People ask you about the Hour. Say, ‘Knowledge of it rests only with Allah. What could make you know? Perhaps the Hour is near.’ (63) Indeed, Allah has cursed the disbelievers and prepared for them a blazing Fire, (64) where they will remain forever. They will find neither protector nor helper. (65) On the Day their faces are turned over in the Fire, they will say, ‘If only we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!’ (66)”
Allah, exalted is He, says: “If the hypocrites do not desist,” that is, from their hypocrisy; “and those in whose hearts is a sickness,” meaning immorality—namely, the fornicators; “and those who spread rumors in Medina,” by means of lies. Some of them, whenever the Messenger of Allah’s military detachments went out, would spread among the people reports that they had been killed and defeated, saying, “The enemy has come upon you,” and similar things. (1)
Al-Kalbi said: They loved for indecency to spread among the believers, and they would disseminate reports.
“We shall surely incite you against them”: We shall surely set you against them and give you power over them. “Then they will not remain your neighbors therein”: they will not dwell alongside you in Medina except for a short while, until they are expelled from it. It was also said: We shall give you power over them until you kill them and rid Medina of them.
“Accursed”: driven away. It is in the accusative as a circumstantial expression. “Wherever they are found”: wherever they are encountered and apprehended. “They shall be seized and ruthlessly slain”: that is, this is the ruling concerning them, stated in the form of a command. “Allah’s way”: that is, in accordance with Allah’s way, “with those who passed on before”—among the hypocrites and those who did the like of what these people did. “And you will never find any change in Allah’s way.”
Allah, exalted is He, says: “People ask you about the Hour. Say, ‘Knowledge of it rests only with Allah. What could make you know?’” That is, what could inform you of the matter of the Hour and when it will come to pass? Meaning, you do not know it. “Perhaps the Hour is near.” “Indeed, Allah has cursed the disbelievers and prepared for them a blazing Fire, where they will remain forever. They will find neither protector nor helper, on the Day their faces are turned over in the Fire.”
