Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“Their greeting on the Day they meet Him will be: ‘Peace.’ And He has prepared for them a noble reward” (44).

“And glorify Him”—that is, pray to Him—“morning,” meaning the dawn prayer, “and evening,” meaning the afternoon prayer. Al-Kalbi said: “And evening” refers to the noon, afternoon, sunset, and night prayers.

Mujahid said: It means: say, “Glory be to Allah; all praise is due to Allah; there is no god but Allah; Allah is the Greatest; and there is no power nor strength except through Allah.” Thus, glorification is used to encompass its related expressions.

It was also said that what is meant by His saying, “much remembrance,” is these words, which may be spoken by one in a state of ritual purity, one in major ritual impurity, and one in a state of minor ritual impurity (1).

“It is He who sends blessings upon you, as do His angels”: Allah’s sending blessings means His mercy, while the angels’ sending blessings means their seeking forgiveness for the believers.

Al-Suddi said: The Children of Israel said to Moses, “Does our Lord send blessings?” This statement greatly troubled Moses, so Allah revealed to him: “Tell them: I do send blessings, and My blessings are My mercy; and My mercy encompasses all things” (2).

It was also said that Allah’s sending blessings upon a servant means spreading honourable mention of him among His servants. And it was said: praising him.

Anas said: When the verse, “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet,” was revealed, Abu Bakr said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has not singled you out with any honour without giving us a share in it.” So Allah revealed this verse (3).

His saying, “so that He may bring you out of darkness into light,” means: from the darkness of disbelief into the light of faith—that is, through His mercy, His guidance, and the angels’ supplication for you, He has brought you out of the darkness of disbelief into the light. “And He is ever merciful to the believers.” “Their greeting”—that is, the greeting of the believers—“on the Day they meet Him,” that is, when they see Allah, “will be: ‘Peace’”: Allah will greet them with peace and preserve them from every affliction.
