the Messenger, do not hold back from him, and patiently endure whatever befalls you, just as he did when his front tooth was broken, his face was wounded, his uncle was killed, and he suffered many kinds of harm. Yet despite all this, he shared your hardship in his own person. So do likewise, and follow his sunnah.

“For whoever hopes in Allah” is in apposition to His saying, “for you,” specifying, after the general reference to the believers, those for whom this applies. That is, taking the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, as an example is for whoever hopes in Allah. Ibn Abbas said: “Whoever hopes for Allah’s reward.” Muqatil said: “Whoever fears Allah.” (1) “And the Last Day”: that is, whoever fears the Day of Resurrection, on which deeds will be recompensed. “And remembers Allah often”: in every circumstance, in times of ease and hardship.

“And when the believers saw the confederates, they said, ‘This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us. Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.’ And it only increased them in faith and submission.” (22)
