ihram, such as hunting game, trimming the nails, cutting the hair, and the like. Ibrahim, ‘Ata’, and Mujahid said: It means insulting others, as indicated by the Prophet’s saying, “Reviling a Muslim is sinful disobedience, and fighting him is disbelief.” (1) Al-Dahhak said: It means calling one another by offensive nicknames, as indicated by His saying, exalted is He, “Do not call one another by offensive nicknames. How evil it is to be called sinful after having believed.” (al-Hujurat 49:11)
‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Nu‘aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il informed us; Adam informed us; Sayyar Abu al-Hakam 30/b informed us. He said: I heard Abu Hazim say: I heard Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah and does not engage in sexual relations or commit sinful disobedience will return as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.” (2)
His saying, exalted is He, “and no disputing during Hajj”: Ibn Mas‘ud and Ibn ‘Abbas said: Disputing is for one to argue and quarrel with his companion until he angers him. This was also the view of ‘Amr ibn Dinar, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, ‘Ikrimah, al-Zuhri, ‘Ata’, and Qatadah.
Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad said: It is for some of them to say, “Hajj is today,” while others say, “Hajj is tomorrow.” Al-Qurazi said: When Quraysh gathered at Mina, one group would say, “Our Hajj is more complete than yours,” and the other group would say, “Our Hajj is more complete than yours.”
Muqatil said: At the Farewell Pilgrimage, after they had entered ihram for Hajj, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them, “Make your Hajj talbiyah an umrah, except for those who have garlanded their sacrificial animals.” (3) They said, “How can we make it an umrah when we have designated it as Hajj?” This was their disputing.
Ibn Zayd said: They would stand at different stations, each claiming that his station was the station of Abraham, and they would dispute over this. It was also said that this refers to the practice of the people of the Age of Ignorance: some would stand at ‘Arafah and others at Muzdalifah; some would perform Hajj in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, while others would perform it in Dhu al-Hijjah. Each would say that what he did was correct. So He, majestic is His mention, said, “and no disputing during Hajj”—that is, the rites of Hajj have been established according to what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did, and there is to be no disagreement concerning them thereafter. This is the meaning of the Prophet’s saying, “Indeed, time has returned to its original order, as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth.” (4)
Mujahid said: Its meaning is that there is no doubt that Hajj takes place in Dhu al-Hijjah; thus the postponement of the sacred months was abolished. The scholars of meanings said: The apparent wording of the verse is a statement of negation, but its meaning is a prohibition: that is, do not engage in sexual relations, do not commit sinful disobedience, and do not dispute, as in His saying,
