Surah al-Sajdah (The Prostration)
Meccan (1). Ata' said: Except for three verses, beginning with His words, “Is one who is a believer...” up to the end of the three verses (2) (3).
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
“Alif, Lam, Mim. (1) The revelation of the Book, concerning which there is no doubt, is from the Lord of all worlds. (2) Or do they say, ‘He has fabricated it’? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord, so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you, that they may be guided. (3) Allah is He who created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them in six days, then rose over the Throne. Apart from Him, you have neither protector nor intercessor. Will you not then take heed? (4)”
“Alif, Lam, Mim. The revelation of the Book, concerning which there is no doubt, is from the Lord of all worlds.” Muqatil said: There is no doubt that it is a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.
“Or do they say”: rather, they say, “He has fabricated it.” It was also said that the letter mim is an additional particle, meaning: “Do they say, ‘He has fabricated it’?”—a question of rebuke. It was also said that “or” here means “and,” meaning: “And they say, ‘He has fabricated it.’” And it was said that something is implied in the wording; its sense is: “Do they then believe, or do they say, ‘He has fabricated it’?”
Then He said: “Rather, it is”—meaning, the Quran—“the truth from your Lord, so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you.” That is, no warner had come to them before you. Qatadah said: They were an unlettered nation to whom no warner had come before Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace (4). Ibn Abbas and Muqatil said: This refers to the interval that occurred between Jesus and Muhammad, may Allah’s blessings be upon them both (5). “That they may be guided.”
“Allah is He who created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them in six days, then rose over the Throne. Apart from Him, you have neither protector nor intercessor. Will you not then take heed?”
