“Do you not see how Allah causes the night to merge into the day and causes the day to merge into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course until an appointed term? And Allah is All-Aware of what you do. That is because Allah is the Truth, while whatever they invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Most Great. Do you not see how the ships sail through the sea by Allah’s favor, so that He may show you some of His signs? Surely in this are signs for everyone who is steadfast and grateful. When waves like canopies engulf them, they call upon Allah, devoting their religion sincerely to Him. But when He delivers them safely to land, some of them remain steadfast. Yet none rejects Our signs except every treacherous ingrate.” (29–32)
“Your creation and your resurrection are but as that of a single soul”—that is, like the creation of a single soul (1) and its resurrection; nothing is impossible for Him—“Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.”
“That is because Allah is the Truth”: that is, what I have mentioned is so that you may know that Allah is the Truth, and that whatever they invoke besides Him is falsehood, and that Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.
“Do you not see how the ships sail through the sea by Allah’s favor?” That is, this is among Allah’s favors upon you. “So that He may show you some of His signs”—that is, His wonders. “Surely in this are signs for everyone who is steadfast” in obeying Allah’s command ⦗73/b⦘, “and grateful” for His blessings.
“When waves like canopies engulf them,” Muqatil said: “Like mountains.” Al-Kalbi said: “Like clouds.” Zulal (canopies) is the plural of zullah (canopy); the waves are compared to them because of their abundance and height. Though a wave is singular, it is described as being like canopies, which is plural, because one wave comes after another.
“They call upon Allah, devoting their religion sincerely to Him. But when He delivers them safely to land, some of them remain steadfast”: that is, he is just and faithfully fulfills on land what he pledged to Allah at sea—namely, to devote worship to Him alone. In other words, he remains firm in his faith.
