Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“But as for those who disbelieve and deny Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter, they will be brought forth into the punishment. So glorify Allah when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning. To Him belongs all praise in the heavens and the earth, and in the late afternoon and when you enter the noon.”

“But as for those who believe and do righteous deeds, they will be made joyful in a garden”: that is, a garden in the fullest bloom. “They will be made joyful.” Ibn Abbas said: “They will be honored.” Mujahid and Qatadah said: “They will be granted bliss.” Abu Ubaydah said: “They will be delighted.” Ḥabrah means joy. It is also said that, linguistically, ḥabrah denotes every pleasant blessing, while taḥbīr means beautification.

Al-Awza‘i related from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir: “They will be made joyful” refers to celestial singing in Paradise. (1) Al-Awza‘i said: “When he begins the singing, not a single tree in Paradise remains without responding.” He also said: “No creature of Allah has a more beautiful voice than Israfil. When he begins the singing, he causes the inhabitants of the seven heavens to interrupt their prayers and glorification.”

“But as for those who disbelieve and deny Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter”—that is, the Resurrection on the Day of Resurrection—“they will be brought forth into the punishment.” His saying, Most High, “So glorify Allah,” means: Pray to Allah. “When you enter the evening” means when you enter the evening; this refers to the Maghrib and Isha prayers. “And when you enter the morning” means when you enter the morning; this refers to the Fajr prayer.

“To Him belongs all praise in the heavens and the earth.” Ibn Abbas said: “The inhabitants of the heavens and the earth praise Him and pray to Him.” “And in the late afternoon”: that is, pray to Allah in the late afternoon, meaning the Asr prayer. “And when you enter the noon”: that is, when you enter the midday time, referring to the Dhuhr prayer.

Nafi ibn al-Azraq asked Ibn Abbas, “Do you find the five prayers in the Quran?” He replied, “Yes,” and recited these two verses. He then said, “This verse combines the five prayers and their appointed times.” (2)
