Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“And who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against Allah or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is there not a dwelling in Hell for the disbelievers? Those who strive for Our sake—We shall surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with those who excel in good.”

“And who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against Allah,” claiming that Allah has a partner or that He has commanded indecencies; “or denies the truth,” namely Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the Quran, “when it comes to him? Is there not a dwelling in Hell for the disbelievers?” This is an interrogative expression intended as an affirmation; that is: does this disbelieving denier not have an abode in Hell?

“Those who strive for Our sake”: those who fight the polytheists in support of Our religion. “We shall surely guide them to Our ways”: We shall surely keep them firm upon that for which they fought. It was also said: We shall surely increase them in guidance, as He says: “Allah increases those who are guided in guidance” (Maryam 19:76). And it was said: We shall surely grant them success in finding the straight path—the path by which Allah’s pleasure is attained.

Sufyan ibn Uyaynah said: “When people differ, look to what the people of the frontier regions adhere to, for Allah says: ‘Those who strive for Our sake—We shall surely guide them to Our ways.’” It was also said that striving means patiently persevering in acts of obedience. Al-Hasan said: “The best jihad is to oppose one’s whims.” Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad said: “Those who strive in seeking knowledge—We shall surely guide them to the ways of acting upon it.” Sahl ibn Abd Allah said: “Those who strive to establish the sunnah—We shall surely guide them to the ways of Paradise.” It is also narrated from Ibn Abbas: “Those who strive in obedience to Us—We shall surely guide them to the ways leading to Our reward.”

“And indeed, Allah is with those who excel in good,” through His support and assistance in their worldly life, and through reward and forgiveness in their final abode.
