then they exited ihram; but those who had entered ihram for Hajj, or had combined Hajj and ‘Umrah, did not exit ihram until the Day of Sacrifice. (1)

We knew of no other rite, nor did we know ‘Umrah.” (2)
It is also related from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Hajj alone. (3)
A group held that qiran is best. This was the view of al-Thawri and the proponents of juristic opinion. They cited what Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Salihi informed us; Abu Sa‘id Muhammad ibn Musa al-Sayrafi informed us; Abu al-‘Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub al-Asamm informed us; Muhammad ibn Hisham ibn Mulas al-Numayri informed us; Marwan ibn Mu‘awiyah al-Fazari informed us; and Humayd informed us, who said: Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered ihram, saying: ‘Labbayka—here I am, O Allah—for Hajj and ‘Umrah.’” (4)
Another group held that tamattu‘ is best. This was the view of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishaq ibn Rahawayh. They cited what ‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Nu‘aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il informed us; Yahya ibn Bukayr informed us; al-Layth informed us, from ‘Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim ibn ‘Abd Allah, from Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed tamattu‘ in the Farewell Pilgrimage, performing ‘Umrah before Hajj. He brought sacrificial animals with him from Dhu al-Hulayfah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began by entering ihram for ‘Umrah and then entered ihram for Hajj. The people likewise performed ‘Umrah before Hajj with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Among them were those who had brought sacrificial animals, and others who had not. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived in Mecca, he said to the people: ‘Whoever among you has brought a sacrificial animal must not exit ihram from anything that had become prohibited to him until he completes his Hajj. Whoever among you has not brought a sacrificial animal should circumambulate the House, walk between Safa and Marwah, trim his hair, and exit ihram; then he should enter ihram for Hajj. Whoever cannot find a sacrificial animal must fast three days during Hajj and seven when he returns to his family.’
When he arrived in Mecca, he circumambulated the House and first touched the Corner. He then jogged for three circuits and walked for four. After completing his circumambulation of the House, he performed two units of prayer by the Station, pronounced the greeting of peace, and departed. Then he came to Safa and made seven circuits between Safa and Marwah. He did not exit ihram from anything that had become prohibited to him until he had completed his Hajj and sacrificed his offering
