“Do not let them turn you away from the verses of Allah after they have been revealed to you. Call to your Lord, and do not be among the polytheists.” (87) “And do not invoke another god alongside Allah. There is no god worthy of worship except Him. Everything will perish except His Face. To Him belongs all judgment, and to Him you will be returned.” (88)
“Do not let them turn you away from the verses of Allah,” meaning the Quran, “after they have been revealed to you. Call to your Lord,” that is, to knowing Him and affirming His oneness, “and do not be among the polytheists.” Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The address is outwardly directed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but what is intended is the followers of his religion; that is: Do not support the disbelievers or agree with them.
“And do not invoke another god alongside Allah. There is no god worthy of worship except Him. Everything will perish except His Face,” meaning: except Him. It was also said: except His dominion. Abu al-‘Aliyah said: except that which is intended for His sake. “To Him belongs all judgment,” meaning the final decision of judgment. “And to Him you will be returned”: you will be brought back in the Hereafter, and He will recompense you according to your deeds.
