while they were unaware that she was his sister and that she was watching over him. Ibn Abbas said: Pharaoh’s wife had no concern in this world greater than finding a wet nurse for him. Whenever they brought him a wet nurse, he would not take her breast. This is the meaning of His saying, glorified and exalted is He: “And We had already forbidden him foster mothers.”
“And We had already forbidden him foster mothers. So she said, ‘Shall I direct you to a household who will care for him on your behalf and be sincere toward him?’ Thus We restored him to his mother, so that her eyes might be comforted and she would not grieve, and so that she would know that Allah’s promise is true; but most of them do not know.” (12–13)
﴿وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ﴾ أَنَّهَا أُخْتُهُ وَأَنَّهَا تَرْقُبُهُ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: إِنَّ امرأة فرعون كل هَمُّهَا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا أَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُ مُرْضِعَةً، فَكُلَّمَا أَتَوْا بِمُرْضِعَةٍ لَمْ يَأْخُذْ ثَدْيَهَا، فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ ﷿: ﴿وَحَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْمَرَاضِعَ﴾
﴿وَحَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْمَرَاضِعَ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَقَالَتْ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ يَكْفُلُونَهُ لَكُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُ نَاصِحُونَ (١٢) فَرَدَدْنَاهُ إِلَى أُمِّهِ كَيْ تَقَرَّ عَيْنُهَا وَلَا تَحْزَنَ وَلِتَعْلَمَ أَنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (١٣) ﴾
