Muhammad ibn Bishr, from Abu Hayyan, from Abu Zur‘ah, from Abd Allah ibn Amr, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “The first of the signs to appear will be the rising of the sun from the west and the emergence of the Beast upon the people in the forenoon. Whichever of the two comes before the other, the latter will follow it shortly thereafter.” (1)
Abu Sa‘id al-Shurayhi informed us; Abu Ishaq al-Tha‘labi informed us; Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Fanjuwayh informed us; Abu Bakr ibn Kharjah informed us; Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Sulayman al-Hadrami informed us; Hushaym ibn Hammad informed us; Amr ibn Muhammad al-Abqari informed us, from Talhah, from Amr, from Abd Allah ibn Umayr al-Laythi, from Abu Sarihah al-Ansari, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said:
“The Beast will have three appearances over the course of time. It will first emerge in the farthest part of Yemen, and news of it will spread through the desert ⦗59/b⦘ without reaching the town”—meaning Mecca. “It will then remain for a long time, after which it will emerge a second time near Mecca. News of it will spread through the desert and reach the town”—meaning Mecca. “Then, while the people are one day in the mosque most sacred and most honored by Allah—the Sacred Mosque—they will suddenly find it at one side of the mosque, drawing ever nearer and nearer.”
Ibn Umar said: “It will emerge in the area between the Black Corner and the Gate of Banu Makhzum, on the right-hand side of one leaving, in the middle of that space. The people will scatter away from it, but a group will stand firm, knowing that they could not escape Allah. It will emerge before them, shaking the dust from its head, and pass by them, polishing their faces until it leaves them shining like radiant stars. Then it will go forth through the earth: no seeker will catch it, nor will any fugitive escape it. A man will even stand in prayer, seeking refuge from it thereby, but it will come to him from behind and say, ‘So-and-so, are you praying now?’ He will then turn toward it, and it will mark him upon his face. Thereafter, people will live as neighbors in their homes, travel together on their journeys, and share in wealth, while the disbeliever will be recognized from the believer. The believer will be addressed, ‘O believer,’ and the disbeliever, ‘O disbeliever.’” (2)
Abu Sa‘id al-Shurayhi informed us; Abu Ishaq al-Tha‘labi informed us; al-Hasan ibn Muhammad informed me; Abu Bakr ibn Malik al-Qati‘i informed us; Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal informed us; my father informed us; Bahz narrated to us; Hammad—namely Ibn Abi Salamah—narrated to us; Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Aws ibn Khalid, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The Beast will emerge carrying the staff of Moses and the seal of Solomon. With the staff, it will brighten the believer’s face and will crush the disbeliever’s nose” (3)
