Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“And they rejected them, while their souls were convinced of them, out of injustice and arrogance. So see what the end of the corrupters was. (14) And We certainly gave David and Solomon knowledge, and they said, ‘Praise be to Allah, who has favoured us above many of His believing servants.’ (15)”

Then Allah showed him another sign and said, “Put your hand into your bosom.” The bosom is the opening cut into a garment. The scholars of tafsir said: He was wearing a woollen tunic with neither sleeves nor buttons. So he put his hand into its opening and drew it out, whereupon it shone like lightning. This is the meaning of His saying, “It will emerge white, without harm”—that is, without leprosy.

“Among nine signs”: that is, this is one sign together with nine signs with which you have been sent, “to Pharaoh and his people. Indeed, they were a defiantly disobedient people.” “But when Our signs came to them, clear to see”—that is, distinct and evident, visible to the eye—“they said, ‘This is manifest magic,’” meaning apparent magic.

“And they rejected them”: that is, they denied the signs and did not acknowledge that they were from Allah, “while their souls were convinced of them”: that is, they knew that they were from Allah. His saying, “out of injustice and arrogance,” means: out of associating partners with Allah and pride that kept them from believing in what Moses had brought. “So see what the end of the corrupters was.”

His saying, exalted is He, “And We certainly gave David and Solomon knowledge,” means knowledge of judgment, the speech of birds and animals, the subjection of the devils, and the glorification of the mountains. “And they said, ‘Praise be to Allah, who has favoured us’” with prophethood, the Scripture, and the subjection of the devils, the jinn, and humankind, “above many of His believing servants.”
