Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Samad al-Jawzajani informed us; Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn Ahmad al-Khuza'i informed us; al-Haytham ibn Kulayb informed us; Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi informed us; Ishaq ibn Mansur related to us; Abd al-Razzaq informed us; Ja'far ibn Sulayman informed us; Thabit related to us, from Anas, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered Mecca during the compensatory lesser pilgrimage, while Ibn Rawahah walked before him, reciting:

“Clear his path, O sons of the disbelievers! Today we shall strike you for the sake of its revelation—
Strikes that remove heads from their resting places,
And make a close friend forget his friend.”

Umar said to him, “O Ibn Rawahah, do you recite poetry in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and within Allah’s Sacred Sanctuary?” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Leave him, O Umar, for it is swifter against them than a volley of arrows.” (1)

Abd al-Wahid al-Malihi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Na'imi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma'il related to us; Hajjaj ibn Minhal related to us; Shu'bah related to us; Adi informed me that he heard al-Bara say: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Hassan, “Satirize them—or exchange satire with them—and Gabriel is with you.” (2)

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Samad al-Jawzajani informed us; Abu al-Qasim al-Khuza'i informed us; al-Haytham ibn Kulayb informed us; Abu Isa related to us; Isma'il ibn Musa al-Fazari and Ali ibn Hujr—the meaning being the same—said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad related to us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, 53/b would set up a pulpit for Hassan ibn Thabit in the mosque. Standing upon it, he would extol the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in defense of him, or defend the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would say: “Indeed, Allah supports Hassan with the Holy Spirit, Gabriel, so long as he defends—or extols—the Messenger of Allah.” (3)

Isma'il ibn Abd al-Qahir informed us; Abd al-Ghaffar ibn Muhammad informed us; Muhammad ibn Isa al-Juludi related to us; Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan related to us; Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj related to us; Abd al-Malik ibn Shu'ayb ibn al-Layth related to us,

(1) Reported by al-Tirmidhi in al-Adab, chapter: “What has been related regarding the recitation of poetry,” 8:138-140. He said: “This is a hasan gharib sahih hadith through this chain. Abd al-Razzaq also narrated this hadith from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, in another narration: that the Prophet entered Mecca for the compensatory Umrah, with Ka'b ibn Malik before him. Some hadith scholars consider this more correct, because Abd Allah ibn Rawahah was killed on the day of Mu'tah, whereas the compensatory Umrah took place after that.” Al-Tirmidhi also reported it in his separate work al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyyah, p. 145; al-Nasa'i in al-Manasik, chapter: “Reciting poetry in the Sacred Sanctuary,” 2:25-26; Abu Nu'aym in al-Hilyah, 6:292; and the compiler of Sharh al-Sunnah, 12:374. (2) Reported by al-Bukhari in Bad' al-Khalq, chapter: “Mention of the angels,” 6:304; in al-Maghazi, 7:416; and in al-Adab, 10:546; by Muslim in Fada'il al-Sahabah, chapter: “The virtues of Hassan,” no. 2486, 4:1933; and by the compiler of Sharh al-Sunnah, 12:377. (3) Reported by al-Tirmidhi in al-Adab, chapter: “What has been related regarding the recitation of poetry,” 8:137. He said: “This is a hasan gharib sahih hadith.” It was also reported in al-Shama'il, p. 147; authenticated by al-Hakim, 3:487; and reported by the compiler of Sharh al-Sunnah, 12:377.
