“The people of Lot denied the messengers. (160) When their brother Lot said to them, ‘Will you not fear Allah? (161) Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger to you. (162) So fear Allah and obey me. (163) I ask of you no reward for this; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds. (164) Do you approach males among all people, (165) and leave the spouses your Lord has created for you? Rather, you are a transgressing people.’ (166) They said, ‘If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be among those expelled.’ (167) He said, ‘Indeed, I am among those who abhor your deed. (168) My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.’ (169) So We saved him and all his family, (170) except an old woman who remained behind. (171)”
“And do not harm her, lest the punishment of a momentous Day overtake you,” that is, by hamstringing her. “Yet they hamstrung her, and so came to regret it,” for having hamstrung her when they saw the punishment. “Then the punishment overtook them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers.” “And indeed, your Lord is truly the Almighty, the Most Merciful.”
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “The people of Lot denied the messengers, when their brother Lot said to them, ‘Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger to you. So fear Allah and obey me. I ask of you no reward for this; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds. Do you approach males...’” Muqatil said: this means sexual intercourse with men. “...among all people,” meaning, among the descendants of Adam. “And leave the spouses your Lord has created for you.” Mujahid said: You have forsaken intercourse with women for intercourse with men through their anuses. “Rather, you are a transgressing people”—that is, people who overstep the bounds, going beyond what is lawful into what is forbidden.
“They said, ‘If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be among those expelled,’” from our town. “He said, ‘Indeed, I am among those who abhor your deed,’” that is, among those who detest it. Then he supplicated, saying: “My Lord, save me and my family from what they do,” from their vile deed. Allah, Exalted is He, said: “So We saved him and all his family, except an old woman who remained behind.” She was Lot’s wife; she remained amid the punishment and destruction.
