the denial will inevitably befall whoever has denied, and he will not be granted repentance until he is recompensed for his deeds. Ibn Jarir (1) said: It will be a lasting, inescapable punishment and an abiding destruction, causing some of you to follow others.

They differed concerning it. Some said: It was the Day of Badr, when seventy of them were killed and seventy taken captive. This was the view of Abdullah ibn Masud, Ubayy ibn Kab, Mujahid, and Muqatil; that is, they were killed on the Day of Badr, and the punishment of the Hereafter joined them, remaining inescapable for them.

Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Nuaymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Ismail informed us; Umar ibn Hafs ibn Ghiyath informed us; my father informed us; al-Amash informed us; Muslim related to us from Masruq, who said: Abdullah said, “Five have passed: the Smoke, the Moon, the Romans, the Mighty Blow, and the inevitable punishment.” (2)

“So it will inevitably befall you.” It was also said that the inevitable punishment is the punishment of the Hereafter.

التَّكْذِيبُ لَازِمًا لِمَنْ كَذَّبَ، فَلَا يُعْطَى التَّوْبَةَ حَتَّى يُجَازَى بِعَمَلِهِ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ جَرِيرٍ (١) عَذَابًا دَائِمًا لَازِمًا وَهَلَاكًا مُقِيمًا يُلْحِقُ بَعْضَكُمْ بِبَعْضٍ. وَاخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ، فَقَالَ قَوْمٌ: هُوَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ قُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ سَبْعُونَ وَأُسِرَ سَبْعُونَ. وَهُوَ قَوْلُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَأَبِيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ وَمُجَاهِدٍ وَمُقَاتِلٍ، يَعْنِي: أَنَّهُمْ قُتِلُوا يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ وَاتَّصَلَ بِهِمْ عَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ، لَازِمًا لَهُمْ. أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ الْمَلِيحِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ النُّعَيْمِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبِي، أَخْبَرَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمٌ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: خَمْسٌ قَدْ مَضَيْنَ: الدُّخَانُ، وَالْقَمَرُ، وَالرُّومُ، وَالْبَطْشَةُ، وَاللِّزَامُ" (٢) ﴿فَسَوْفَ يَكُونُ لِزَامًا﴾ وَقِيلَ: اللِّزَامُ هُوَ عَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ.
