“When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear it raging and roaring.” (12)

His saying, exalted is He: “But they deny the Hour”—that is, the Resurrection—“and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a blazing Fire”: a fiercely burning fire.

“When it sees them from a distant place”: al-Kalbi and al-Suddi said: from the distance of a year’s journey. It was also said: from the distance of one hundred years’ journey; and it was said: five hundred years.

It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: “Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat between the eyes of Hell.” They asked, “Does it have two eyes?” He replied, “Yes. Have you not heard the saying of Allah, Most High: ‘When it sees them from a distant place’?” (1)

﴿إِذَا رَأَتْهُمْ مِنْ مَكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُوا لَهَا تَغَيُّظًا وَزَفِيرًا (١٢) ﴾ قَوْلُهُ ﷿: ﴿بَلْ كَذَّبُوا بِالسَّاعَةِ﴾ بِالْقِيَامَةِ، ﴿وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِمَنْ كَذَّبَ بِالسَّاعَةِ سَعِيرًا﴾ نَارًا مُسْتَعِرَةً. ﴿إِذَا رَأَتْهُمْ مِنْ مَكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ﴾ قَالَ الْكَلْبِيُّ وَالسُّدِّيُّ: مِنْ مَسِيرَةِ عَامٍ. وَقِيلَ: مِنْ مَسِيرَةِ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ. وَقِيلَ: خَمْسُمِائَةِ سَنَةٍ. وَثَبَتَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: "مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْ جَهَنَّمَ مَقْعَدًا". قَالُوا: وَهَلْ لَهَا مِنْ عَيْنَيْنِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ أَلَمْ تَسْتَمِعُوا قَوْلَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: ﴿إِذَا رَأَتْهُمْ مِنْ مَكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ﴾ (١)
