to the knee. The same applies among unmarriageable relatives in one another’s presence. A woman’s ruling when looking at an unrelated man is the same as his ruling when looking at her.
A man may look at the entire body of his wife and of his slave woman with whom intercourse is lawful; likewise, she may look at his entire body, except for the actual genitalia, at which looking is disliked. If a man marries off his slave woman, it becomes unlawful for him to look at her private parts, just as with an unrelated slave woman. It is narrated from Amr ibn Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When one of you marries his slave woman to his male slave, let him not look at what is below the navel and above the knee.” (1)
