An effeminate man used to enter upon the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and they considered him to be among those without sexual desire. One day, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered while the man was with one of his wives, describing a woman. He said, “When she approaches, she approaches with four; and when she turns away, she turns away with eight.” The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I see that this man knows what is here. He must never enter upon you.” So they prevented him from entering upon them. (1)
“Or children who are not yet aware of women’s private parts.” The word “child” here refers to children, being used in both the singular and plural sense; that is, they have not uncovered women’s private parts for intercourse and thereby become acquainted with them. It was also said that, due to their young age, they cannot distinguish the private parts from other parts of the body. This was the view of Mujahid. It was also said that they are not capable of relations with women. And it was said that they have not reached the age of sexual desire.
“And let them not stamp their feet so as to make known what they conceal of their adornment.” When a woman walked, she would stamp her foot so that the sound of her anklets might be heard, or so that her anklets might become visible. She was therefore forbidden from doing so.
“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may prosper”—that is, repent of the shortcomings committed regarding His commands and prohibitions. It was also said: return to obedience to Allah concerning what He has commanded you and forbidden you of the etiquettes mentioned in this surah. Ibn Amir recited the vocative phrases “O believers,” “O magician,” and “O company of jinn and mankind” with the letter ha bearing a dammah, and paused without an alif, in accordance with the written text. The others recited the ha with a fathah, as is standard.
