“On the Day when We shall roll up the heaven like the folding of a scroll for writings. Just as We began the first creation, We shall restore it—a promise binding upon Us. Surely We will do so. And We have already written in the Psalms, after the Reminder, that My righteous servants shall inherit the land.”

Regarding His saying, “On the Day when We shall roll up the heaven”: Abu Ja‘far read it, “it will be rolled up,” with the initial t- and passive vocalization; consequently, “the heaven” is in the nominative case. The majority recited it, “We shall roll up,” with the initial n- and active vocalization; consequently, “the heaven” is in the accusative case.

“With the folding of the scroll for the writings”: Hamzah, al-Kisa’i, and Hafs from Asim read “for the writings” in the plural, while the others read “for the writing” in the singular. They differed over the meaning of the scroll. Al-Suddi said: The scroll is an angel who records the deeds of the servants, and the preposition is supplementary; thus, the meaning is, “like the folding of the scroll for the writings,” just as in His saying, “has drawn near to you” (al-Naml: 72), where the preposition is likewise supplementary.

Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, and the majority said: The scroll is the sheet used for writings; that is, it is folded because of what has been written upon it. Its meaning is: like folding a sheet over what is written on it. The term “scroll” is derived from a word meaning correspondence, and folding is rolling up, the opposite of unfolding.

“Just as We began the first creation, We shall restore it”: that is, just as We began them in their mothers’ wombs, barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, so We shall restore them on the Day of Resurrection. Similar to this is His saying, Exalted is He: “You have certainly come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time” (al-An‘am: 94). It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “You will be gathered barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.” He then recited: “Just as We began the first creation, We shall restore it.” (1)

“A promise binding upon Us; surely We will do so”: that is, the restoring and resurrection.

Regarding His saying, Exalted is He: “And We have already written in the Psalms, after the Reminder”: Sa‘id ibn Jubayr and Mujahid said: The Psalms refers to all the revealed Books, while the Reminder is the Mother of the Book that is with Him. The meaning is: after He had written its mention in the Preserved Tablet.

Ibn Abbas and al-Dahhak said: The Psalms refers to the Torah, and the Reminder refers to the Books revealed after the Torah.

Al-Sha‘bi said: The Psalms is the Book of David, [and the Reminder is the Torah. It was also said: the Psalms are David’s Psalms] (2), and the Reminder is the Quran. Here, “after” has the meaning of “before,” as in His saying, Exalted is He: “Behind them was a king” (al-Kahf: 97), meaning ahead of them; ⦗23a⦘ and, “After that, He spread out the earth” (al-Nazi‘at: 30), meaning before it.

“The land”: that is, the land of Paradise. “My righteous servants shall inherit it.” Mujahid said: This means the community of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. The evidence is His saying, Exalted is He: “And they will say, ‘All praise is for Allah, who
