“They will not hear even the slightest sound of it, while they will abide forever in all that their souls desire. The greatest terror will not grieve them, and the angels will receive them, saying, ‘This is your Day, which you were promised.’”
“They will not hear even the slightest sound of it”: that is, its sound and the movement of its blazing flames, once they have taken up their abodes in Paradise. Hiss and hasīs mean a faint sound. “While they will abide forever in all that their souls desire”—remaining therein, as He says: “Therein will be whatever souls desire and delights the eyes” (al-Zukhruf: 71).
“The greatest terror will not grieve them.” Ibn Abbas said: The greatest terror is the final blast, as indicated by His saying, Exalted is He: “And on the Day the Trumpet is blown, all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth will be terrified” (al-Naml: 87). Al-Hasan said: It is when a servant is commanded to be taken to the Fire. Ibn Jurayj said: It is when death is slaughtered and the call is made: “O people of Paradise, everlasting life and no death; O people of the Fire, everlasting life and no death.” Sa'id ibn Jubayr and al-Dahhak said: It is when Hell closes over them; and that will be after Allah has brought out of it whomever He wills to bring out. “And the angels will receive them”: that is, the angels will welcome them at the gates of Paradise, congratulating them and saying: “This is your Day, which you were promised.”
