worship where it does not belong.

“You and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell; you will enter it. Had these been true gods, they would not have entered it; and all will abide therein forever. There they will groan, and there they will not hear. Indeed, those for whom the finest reward has already preceded from Us—they will be kept far from it.” (98–101)

“You,” that is, O polytheists, “and what you worship besides Allah,” meaning the idols, “are fuel for Hell,” that is, its kindling. Mujahid and Qatadah said: its firewood. In the language of the people of Yemen, hasab means firewood. Ikrimah said: it means firewood in the Ethiopian language. Al-Dahhak said: This means that they will be cast into the Fire as pebbles are thrown. The root meaning of hasab is throwing. Allah, Exalted is He, says: “We sent against them a stone-bearing wind” (al-Qamar: 34), meaning, a wind that pelted them with stones. Ali ibn Abi Talib recited: “the firewood of Hell.” “You will enter it,” meaning that you will enter it.

“Had these,” meaning the idols, “been gods” in reality, “they would not have entered it,” meaning that their worshippers would not have entered the Fire. “And all will abide therein forever,” meaning both the worshipper and those worshipped. “There they will groan, and there they will not hear.” Ibn Masud said: Regarding this verse, when only those who will remain eternally in the Fire are left therein, they will be placed in coffins of fire. Those coffins will then be placed inside other coffins [then those coffins inside yet other coffins] (1), fastened with nails of fire. Thus, they will hear nothing, and none of them will see that anyone else in the Fire is being punished besides himself.

He then made an exception, saying: “Indeed, those for whom the finest reward has already preceded from Us.” Some scholars said that “indeed” here means “except”: except those for whom the finest reward has already preceded from Us—meaning felicity and the fair promise of Paradise. “They will be kept far from it.” It was said that the verse is general and applies to everyone for whom Allah has decreed felicity.

Most commentators said that it refers to everyone who was worshipped besides Allah while being obedient to Allah and unwilling that anyone should worship him. This is because the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered the Sacred Mosque while the leading men of Quraysh were in the Hatim, and there were three hundred and sixty idols around the Kaabah. Al-Nadr ibn al-Harith confronted him, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, spoke with him until he silenced him. He then recited to him the three verses: “You and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell.” Then he rose and Abdullah ibn al-Zibara al-Sahmi came forward. Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah informed him of what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had said to them. Abdullah said, “By Allah, had I found him, I would have disputed with him.” They then summoned the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Ibn al-Zibara said to him: “You said:”
