send us a messenger to call us, so that we might follow Your signs before we are humiliated and disgraced?” That is, they will say this on the Day of Resurrection: “before we are humiliated and disgraced” by punishment, abasement, indignity, shame, and public exposure.

“Say, ‘Each of us is waiting; so wait, and you will come to know who are the people of the sound path and who is rightly guided.’” (135)

Concerning His saying, “Say, ‘Each of us is waiting’”: that is, awaiting the turns of time. The polytheists said, “We await for Muhammad the vicissitudes of time; when he dies, we shall be rid of him.” Allah Most High said: “So wait”—that is, await—“and you will come to know,” when Allah’s command comes and the Resurrection is established, “who are the people of the sound path,” that is, the straight path, “and who is rightly guided” out of misguidance: us or you?

هَلَّا ﴿أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولًا﴾ يَدْعُونَا، أَيْ: لَقَالُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، ﴿فَنَتَّبِعَ آيَاتِكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ نَذِلَّ وَنَخْزَى﴾ بِالْعَذَابِ، وَالذُّلِّ، وَالْهَوَانِ، وَالْخِزْيِ، وَالِافْتِضَاحِ. ﴿قُلْ كُلٌّ مُتَرَبِّصٌ فَتَرَبَّصُوا فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَصْحَابُ الصِّرَاطِ السَّوِيِّ وَمَنِ اهْتَدَى (١٣٥) ﴾ ﴿قُلْ كُلٌّ مُتَرَبِّصٌ﴾ مُنْتَظِرٌ دَوَائِرَ الزَّمَانِ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَالُوا نَتَرَبَّصُ بِمُحَمَّدٍ حَوَادِثَ الدَّهْرِ، فَإِذَا مَاتَ تَخَلَّصْنَا، قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿فَتَرَبَّصُوا﴾ فَانْتَظِرُوا، ﴿فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ﴾ إِذَا جَاءَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ وَقَامَتِ الْقِيَامَةُ، ﴿مَنْ أَصْحَابُ الصِّرَاطِ السَّوِيِّ﴾ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ، ﴿وَمَنِ اهْتَدَى﴾ مِنَ الضَّلَالَةِ نَحْنُ أَمْ أَنْتُمْ؟.
