“On the Day the Horn is blown, We shall gather the criminals—those who associated partners with Allah—blue-eyed on that Day. (102) They will murmur among themselves, ‘You remained only ten [nights].’ (103) We know best what they will say, when the soundest of them in judgment will say, ‘You remained only a day.’ (104) And they ask you about the mountains. Say, ‘My Lord will blast them away completely.’ (105)”
“On the Day the Horn is blown”: Abū ʿAmr recited it, “We shall blow,” in the first-person plural form, in keeping with His saying, “We shall gather.” The others recited it in the passive form: “the Horn will be blown.” “We shall gather the criminals”—that is, the polytheists—“blue-eyed on that Day.” The blueness meant here is a greenish hue in the darkness of the eye; thus, they will be gathered blue-eyed and black-faced. It has also been said that “blue-eyed” means blind (1), and it has also been said that it means thirsty.
“They will murmur among themselves”: that is, they will confer with one another and speak secretly. “You remained”: that is, you remained in the worldly life, “only ten”—that is, ten nights. It has also been said: in the graves. And it has been said: between the two blasts, which is forty years, because their punishment will be lifted from them between the two blasts. They will consider the duration of their stay to have been short because of the terror they will witness (2).
Allah says, “We know best what they will say”: that is, what they will whisper privately among themselves (3), “when the soundest of them in judgment will say”—the one most complete in intellect and most balanced in speech—“You remained only a day.” It will seem insignificant to them in comparison to the horrors of the Day of Resurrection that await them. It has also been said that they will have forgotten the length of their stay because of the severity of what has overwhelmed them.
Allah, exalted is He, says: “And they ask you about the mountains. Say, ‘My Lord will blast them away completely.’” Ibn ʿAbbās said: A man from Thaqīf asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “What will become of the mountains on the Day of Resurrection?” So Allah revealed this verse (4).
Blasting away means uprooting: He will uproot them from their foundations and reduce them to scattered dust.
“Then He will leave it a level, barren plain, (106) in which you will see neither depression nor elevation. (107) On that Day they will follow the Caller without deviation, and all voices will be humbled before the Most Merciful, so you will hear nothing but a faint whisper. (108) On that Day, intercession will benefit no one except one whom the Most Merciful has permitted and whose word He has approved. (109)”
“Then He will leave it”: that is, He will leave the sites of the mountains upon the earth “a level, barren plain”: smooth, even ground with no vegetation. A plain is that which lies spread out from the earth, while “level” means smooth.
