“And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed. Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me; so worship Me and establish the prayer for My remembrance. Indeed, the Hour is coming—I almost conceal it—so that every soul may be recompensed according to what it strives for.”
“And I have chosen you”: that is, I have singled you out for My messages. Hamzah recited it, “And We have chosen you,” with a stressed nun, using the plural of majesty. “So listen to what is revealed” to you. “Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me; so worship Me,” and worship none besides Me. “And establish the prayer for My remembrance.” Mujahid said: “Establish the prayer so that you may remember Me within it.” Mujahid also said: “If you have missed a prayer and then remember it, perform it.”
Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Salihin informed us; Abu Amr Bakr ibn Muhammad al-Muzani informed us; Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Hafid informed us; al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Bajali informed us; Affan informed us; Qatadah informed us, from Anas, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever forgets a prayer should perform it when he remembers it; it has no expiation other than that.” (1) He then said: I heard him say thereafter: “And establish the prayer for My remembrance.”
“Indeed, the Hour is coming—I almost conceal it.” It was said that its meaning is: Indeed, the Hour is coming; I conceal it. The phrase “I almost” is additional. Most exegetes said that it means: “I almost conceal it from Myself.” This is likewise found in the codices of Ubayy ibn Kab and Abd Allah ibn Masud: “I almost conceal it from Myself; so how could any created being know it?”
In some readings, it is: “So how could I disclose it to you?” This is mentioned in accordance with the Arabs’ custom: when they wish to stress the utmost concealment of something, they say, “I have concealed your secret from myself,” meaning, “I have hidden it most completely.” Yet nothing is hidden from Allah, mighty is His name.
