“And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be decided, while they remain heedless and do not believe.” (39)
“How clearly they will hear and see!” That is, how well they will hear and see on the Day of Resurrection, when hearing and sight will not benefit them! He informs us that, in the Hereafter, they will hear and see what they neither heard nor saw in this world. (1)
Al-Kalbi said: “On the Day of Resurrection, none will hear or see more clearly than they will when (2) Allah Most High says to Jesus, ‘Did you say to the people...’”—the verse (Maryam, 116). “On the Day they come to Us! But today the wrongdoers are in manifest error”—that is, in clear error.
His saying, exalted is He, “And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be decided”: that is, when the reckoning has been completed, the people of Paradise have entered Paradise, the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, and death has been slaughtered.
Abd al-Wahid al-Malihi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nu'aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma'il informed us; Amr ibn Hafs ibn Ghiyath informed us; my father informed us; al-A'mash informed us; Abu Salih informed us from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Death will be brought in the form of a salt-and-pepper ram. Then a caller will call out, ‘O people of Paradise!’ They will look out (3) and behold, and he will say, ‘Do you recognize this?’ They will reply, ‘Yes, this is death,’ and all of them will have seen it. Then he will call out, ‘O people of the Fire!’ They will look out and behold, and he will say, ‘Do you recognize this?’ They will reply, ‘Yes, this is death,’ and all of them will have seen it. It will then be slaughtered, and he will say, ‘O people of Paradise, eternity, with no death! O people of the Fire, eternity, with no death!’ Then he recited: ‘And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be decided, while they remain heedless and do not believe.’” (4)
Abu Isa also narrated it from Ahmad ibn Mani', from al-Nadr ibn Isma'il, from al-A'mash, with this chain of transmission, adding: “Had Allah Most High not decreed life and everlastingness for the people of Paradise, they would have died from joy; and had Allah Most High not decreed life and everlastingness for the people of the Fire, they would have died from grief.” (5)
