Mujālid narrated from al-Shaʿbī, who said: “I was sitting one day when a man came up and asked, ‘Tell me: does Iblis have a wife?’ I replied, ‘I did not attend that wedding!’ Then I remembered His saying, exalted is He: ‘Would you then take him and his offspring as allies besides Me?’ So I realized that offspring can only come from a wife, and I said, ‘Yes.’”
Qatādah said: “They reproduce just as the children of Adam reproduce.”
It was also said that he inserts his tail into his anus and lays eggs, from which a group of devils hatch.
Mujāhid said: Among the offspring of Iblis are Lāqīs and Walhān, who are associated with purification and prayer; al-Haffāf; Murrah—from whom Iblis takes his kunyah; Zalanbūr, who is associated with [the marketplaces, adorning idle talk, false oaths, and praise of merchandise; and Thabr, who is associated with calamities] (1), adorning the scratching of faces, slapping of cheeks, and tearing of garments; al-Aʿwar, who is associated with fornication, blowing into the male organ and the private parts of women; Muṭawwas, who is associated with false reports, casting them upon people’s tongues though they can find no basis for them; and Dāsim, who, when a man enters his home without offering the greeting of peace or mentioning the name of Allah, points out to him household items that have not been put away or are out of their proper place; and when he eats without mentioning the name of Allah, he eats with him. (2)
Al-Aʿmash said: “Sometimes I enter the house without mentioning the name of Allah or offering the greeting of peace, then see a water vessel and say, ‘Remove this,’ and quarrel with them. Then I remember the name of Allah and say, ‘Dāsim, Dāsim.’” (3)
It is narrated from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “There is a devil assigned to ablution called Walhān, so beware of the misgivings concerning water.” (4)
