Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mughallis in Baghdad informed us; Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamadhani narrated to us; Abu Khalid al-Ahmar informed us, from Hatim ibn Abi Saghirah, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, from Aishah, who said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will people be gathered on the Day of Resurrection?” He replied, “Naked and barefoot.” I said, “And the women?” He replied, “And the women.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, we would feel ashamed.” He said, “O Aishah, the matter will be too grave for them to be concerned with looking at one another.” (1)

“The Record will be laid open, and you will see the guilty fearful of what is in it. They will say, ‘Woe to us! What sort of Record is this, that leaves nothing small or great unaccounted for?’ They will find everything they did laid before them, and your Lord does not wrong anyone.” (49)

His saying, exalted is He, “The Record will be laid open,” means the records [of people’s deeds] (2), which will be placed in people’s hands, in their right hands and their left hands. It was also said that it means they will be placed before Allah Most High. “And you will see the guilty fearful,” that is, afraid, “of what is in it,” namely, their evil deeds. “They will say,” when they see them, “Woe to us!” meaning, “Our destruction!” Both “woe” and “calamity” mean destruction; whoever falls into destruction cries out in woe. The purpose of this vocative expression is to draw the attention of those addressed. “What sort of Record is this, that leaves nothing small or great,” from among our sins, “unaccounted for?” Ibn Abbas said: “The small sin is smiling, and the great sin is laughing aloud.” Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: “The small sin is the lesser offences, touching, and kissing; and the great sin is fornication.” “Unaccounted for” means that it has counted them. (3) Al-Suddi said: It has written and recorded them. Muqatil ibn Hayyan said: It has preserved them.

The Imam Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Qadi informed us; Abu al-Abbas Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Harun al-Taysafuni informed us; Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Turabi informed us; Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Bastam informed us; Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Yasar al-Qurashi informed us; Yusuf ibn Udayy al-Misri narrated to us; Abu Damrah Anas ibn Iyad narrated to us, from Abu Hazim, who said: I know it only as a narration from Sahl ibn Sa'd, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Beware of sins regarded as insignificant. The example of sins regarded as insignificant is that of people who camped in the bottom of a valley: one brought a stick, and another brought a stick, until they baked their bread. Indeed, sins regarded as insignificant are destructive.” (4)
